Bodrum Weekend Escape

Now in our volunteer house we have an amazing girl from Poland – Asia. We instantly clicked and started coming up with creative ways to spend our free time together. This time was no exception. Feeling a bit tired of our routine in Muğla, we spontaneously jumped on a bus and decided to go somewhere new. Our flatmates recommended Bodrum, so that’s where we headed.

Bodrum is a small city, just one and a half hours from Muğla. There are buses every half an hour, so, as I mentioned before, travelling around Turkey is much easier than it might seem. Fun fact, this dreamy coastal town was once home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

We drove through magnificent mountains with music in the background, just enjoying the ride. After a smooth trip, we arrived in a Greek-style town where blue and white surrounded us from every side. It reminded me of my hitchhiking trip to Thessaloniki. The town felt almost empty, we arrived early in the morning, just after the tourist season had ended. We slowly wandered through narrow streets that led us towards Bodrum Çarşısı, wondering who lived behind those doors, stopping to admire tiny cats and passing little hippie shops full of handmade crafts.

On our way to Marina Yacht Club, we couldn’t resist stopping for a hot flat white at Espressolab. The coffee was surprisingly good, even better than the ones I’d tried in Coffy. They really know how to balance the taste of coffee with milk. We relaxed there for a while, surrounded by palm trees. The weather was unexpectedly perfect, around 25 degrees. It felt like an escape from the rain back in our city. We even found coconut milk, the first time I’d seen it in my three months in Turkey, haha.

Our steps led us to the best part of Bodrum, the windmills. The road up passed an old prison, interestingly decorated with pictures of Atatürk. It’s a short hike, and with every step the sea and mountains reveal more of their beauty. At the top, the view was incredible, with little goats and sheep running around us. It felt magical.

Going down was much faster. We stopped by Gümbet Beach and took a little swim because the water was perfect. We were having fun like little babies, not caring about anything or anyone. Just us, nature, and water flowing around our feet.

To end our little trip in the right way, we bought simit, the number one bakery snack in Turkey, simple but always tasty. And we had a margarita pizza at Fabbio’s Pizzeria, which was actually really good.

We drove back to our little town, and it welcomed us with cold rain, shit. And we, without any umbrellas, instead of getting sad, started running in the rain, laughing and smiling.

I definitely want to come back to Bodrum for more discoveries, especially the museum parts. If you feel like going there, I’m sharing my Google Maps with recommendations:

Till the next adventure,
